Junior Engineer

For the various Junior Engineer categories, candidates generally need a three-year Diploma in Engineering or an equivalent qualification in the relevant discipline from a recognized University/Institute.

Depending on the particular JE category, accepted disciplines include:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electronics Engineering
  • Electronics & Communication
  • Information Technology
  • Computer Science
  • Communication Engineering
  • Other prescribed combinations

Higher qualifications such as B.E./B.Tech are also accepted for relevant posts where specified.

Candidates must carefully check the post-wise qualification in Annexure-A, because the accepted engineering discipline varies between JE categories.

Depot Material Superintendent

Candidates applying for Depot Material Superintendent must possess a three-year Diploma in Engineering in any discipline from a recognized University/Institution.

A B.E./B.Tech qualification is also accepted in lieu of the prescribed three-year Engineering Diploma.

Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant

The newly added Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA) post is one of the important changes introduced through Corrigendum-1.

Candidates require the prescribed B.Sc qualification with Physics and Chemistry, with the minimum marks and subject combination specified in the revised notification.

The CMA post carries:

  • Level 6
  • Initial Pay: ₹35,400
  • 35 vacancies
  • Age: 18–33 years
  • Prescribed medical standard as notified

The CMA syllabus has also been added to the recruitment notification through the corrigendum.

Important Qualification Condition

Candidates must possess the required educational or technical qualification on or before 13 September 2026.

Candidates waiting for the final result of the prescribed qualification are not eligible to apply.

Therefore, candidates should not apply merely because they are currently studying the required course. The prescribed qualification must already have been obtained by the closing date.

RRB JE Salary 2026

The posts under this recruitment carry Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission.

Particulars Details
Pay Level Level 6
Initial Basic Pay ₹35,400
Pay Matrix 7th CPC
Maximum Basic Pay at Level ₹1,12,400

The basic pay is supplemented by applicable allowances according to Railway rules and the employee’s posting and service conditions. The notification specifically gives ₹35,400 as the initial pay for the notified posts.

Selection Process

The recruitment is conducted through a two-stage Computer Based Test followed by Document Verification and Medical Examination.

CBT-I → CBT-II → Document Verification → Medical Examination → Final Appointment

The RRB will shortlist candidates for CBT-II based on normalized CBT-I marks. The number shortlisted for the second stage is normally up to 15 times the community-wise vacancies, subject to the Railway’s right to vary this number when required.

CBT-I Exam Pattern

CBT-I consists of 100 questions for 100 marks.

Subject Questions Marks
Mathematics 30 30
General Intelligence & Reasoning 25 25
General Awareness 15 15
General Science 30 30
Total 100 100

Duration: 90 minutes.

For candidates eligible to use a scribe, the prescribed compensatory time will apply.

The section-wise distribution is indicative and may vary in the actual question paper.

CBT-II Exam Pattern

CBT-II consists of 150 questions for 150 marks.

Subject Questions Marks
General Awareness 15 15
Physics & Chemistry 15 15
Basics of Computers & Applications 10 10
Basics of Environment & Pollution Control 10 10
Technical Abilities 100 100
Total 150 150

Duration: 120 minutes.

For eligible candidates using a scribe, the duration is 160 minutes.

Negative Marking

There is negative marking in both CBT stages.

For every wrong answer, 1/3 of the marks allotted to that question will be deducted.

Candidates should therefore avoid random guessing, particularly when they are uncertain between multiple options.

Minimum Qualifying Marks

The prescribed minimum percentage in the CBT is:

Category Minimum Marks
UR 40%
EWS 40%
OBC-NCL 30%
SC 30%
ST 25%

The minimum qualifying percentage may be relaxed by 2 marks for PwBD candidates in case of shortage of candidates against reserved PwBD vacancies.

Technical Syllabus

The technical questions in CBT-II depend on the candidate’s selected examination group.

The notification provides separate technical syllabi for:

  • Civil & Allied Engineering
  • Electrical & Allied Engineering
  • Electronics & Allied Engineering
  • Mechanical & Allied Engineering

The syllabus is given in the notification’s Annexure-VIII.

Candidates should therefore prepare the technical portion according to the engineering discipline mapped to the post for which they are eligible.
